Fire Investigation I is the introductory course and the foundation of the four-part AZIAAI Fire Investigation Series. This 40 hour course is designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills in fire scene investigation. Fire Investigation I covers the scientific method of fire investigations, the principles of fire behavior, origin and cause determination, and the legal aspects of fire investigation.

Required Materials: Textbook & Computer capable of accessing the internet, opening/editing Word documents and accessing PDFs, and generally capable of typical office work.

To ensure you are fully prepared for the course, please obtain the following required text and have it with you in class each day.

Fire Investigator: Principles and Practices (6th Edition) by Jones and Bartlett
ISBN: 978-1-284-24705-3

This book will be the same one used throughout the entire four-part Fire Investigation Series.

If your department already has the 5th Edition of this book, it can be used with the understanding that there are some changes, as each edition is updated to align with the current NFPA 921 standards during its publication.

Prerequisites:

You must complete the four (4) CFITrainer.net classes listed below in advance of registration for this course. In order to verify these requirements being met, you will need to submit an up-to-date CFITrainer.net transcript reflecting those classes have been completed. Sumbit the transccript to the dropbox link below. Once these materials are verified and your eligibility is confirmed, you will receive an email  with a code to complete your registration.

  1. The Scientific Method for Fire and Explosion Investigation (1.5 hours online)
  2. Fire Chemistry (1.5 hours online)
  3. Thermometry, Heat, and Heat Transfer (.5 hours online)
  4. Fire Flow Analysis (.5 hours online)

Please note that there will be required online courses for each section of the Fire Investigation Series to aid with information retention and enhance your understanding throughout the series.

Recommended Materials:

In addition to the required text, we suggest reviewing the following materials:

NFPA 921 (2024 edition), Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations

NFPA 1033 (2022 edition), Standards for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigators

These resources will provide valuable insights and support throughout the courses. Older editions of NFPA materials are not recommended as they may not reflect the most current standards and guidelines. For the best learning experience, please use the latest editions.
